Grave Yard — Kilboglashy

Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an irregular area (c. 50m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) with a church (SL020-109001-) in its N half. It has since been extended to the SE and SW. The remains of the original enclosing wall are evident on the W and N sides. Headstones in the older section date from the 18th century to the present day and include some vaults and chest-tombs. Numerous low uninscribed grave-markers are also present. The extension is enclosed by a stone wall with two roadside gateways in the SW wall. The headstones in this section date from the mid-19th century to the present day. During a graveyard clean up in 1995 and 1996, a number of architectural pieces, a Romanesque font and a medieval graveslab were found (SL020-10910-) (M. B. Timoney 2002, 149-59). One of the architectural pieces included a piece of window tracery (SL020-109016-) that was probably from the Augustinian abbey (SL020-108----), c. 250m to the W in Abbeytown (ibid. 157-8, n. 14). A shell midden (SL020-109012-), consisting mainly of oyster shells, was discovered immediately outside the NE wall and oyster shells were also noted on the surface of the interior during the clean-up scheme (ibid., 150). An ecclesiastical enclosure (SL020-109005-) may be preserved in the field boundaries to the S and W. A rectangular building (SL020-109003-), parallel to the church, lies immediately outside the N wall and there is a similar structure (SL020-109004-) at the SW side, which has foundations of another building (SL020-109015-) on its E side (M. B. Timoney 2002, 151).
