Burnt mound in Farranyharpy

In pasture, on the lower NW-facing slopes of Red Hill, located in a small ravine, on the N side of a shallow stream/drain which flows NW from a spring located c. 45m to SE. There is an enclosure (SL019-003----) 15m to NE. This levelled burnt mound is evident as a concentration of small, angular stone fragments in a matrix of black, charcoal-rich soil, exposed for a length of 2.8m NW–SE on the low, eroded N bank of the stream/drain. It is located at a point where the flow of the stream changes direction from NW to NNW. At this point, a small causeway has been created by channelling the stream through a short length of concrete pipe, and infilling the stream gully/drain (Wth 1.4; D 0.4-0.5) with stones. The use of this crossing point by farm stock and farm machinery has eroded the grass cover on the stream bank and exposed a portion of the burnt mound. The full extent of the burnt mound cannot be traced on the flat, grass-covered ground to N of the steam. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 February 2015
