Field system in Tawnamore

Locating in an area of cutaway blanket bog, with scattered, active areas of small-scale machine turf harvesting, on a broad, flat-topped N–S ridge. The E side of the ridge falls into the Easkey River valley. This record was not listed in the SMR (1989). It was listed in the RMP (1995) as ‘field system -pre-bog’ but no source of information or field description was added to the file at that time. The area was inspection in 2014. Remnants of three possible field walls were found. At ITM 538582 827171 a cropmark of low heather highlights a linear concentration (Wth 0.7-1m) of stones which can be traced in a shallow arc NNW–SSE for 19-20m. The stones protrude only slightly above the bog surface but appear densely packed. Located 35m to SE at ITM 538616 827120 is a short length of possible wall (Wth 0.7m) which is visible as a concentration of stones (Wth 0.7m) extending for 4-5m on a NW–SE axis. It is bisected on a WNW–ESE axis a by a linear peat bank (Wth 1m; H 0.4m). Located 10m to ESE at ITM 538618 827111 is another short length of possible wall consisting of a concentration (Wth 0.8-1m) of stones barely protruding from the bog surface. It can be traced for 3m on a NE–SW axis. The relationship between the three discrete lengths of wall is unknown, and it is not possible to reconstruct the original pattern of the field system.
