Located on a high ridge bordered on it S side by a rocky ledge, with sandhills to N and NW. A rectangular shaded feature (c. 15-17m N-S; c. 9-10m E−W) with ‘Church’ in gothic script written beside it, is shown on the 1836-7 OS 6-inch map; the location is annotated ‘Church (Site of)’ on the 1840-1 edition. In the OS Letters, O’Donovan recorded ‘an old edifice, in ruins, at which there was formerly a burial [SL008-096002-] as tradition says.’ He theorised that it might be the ‘Creadran Cille, which is mentioned in the annals at the year 1257’ as the site ‘in Ros Cede’ of a battle between Godfrey O’Donnell, Lord of Tirconnell and Maurice Fitzgerald, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland (O’Flanagan 1928, 133-4 (53)). There are no visible remains of a church or graveyard (SL008-096002-) at the location.
