On a slight W-facing slope. Archaeological excavation during 2007 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe N6 road development revealed a concentration of four furnaces in a small area (c. 35 sq. m). These consisted of pits (diam. 1m-1.45m; D 0.2m) with three deposits including metal slag and charcoal. Rake-out pits were also present. Four C14 dates ranged between cal. AD 1296-1401 to cal. AD 1469-1633, providing medieval and post-medieval dates for the furnaces. (Conboy 2010c; 2010f, 9-14, 30).
