Embanked enclosure — Kilkenny

At the SE end of a slight NW-SE ridge in an undulating landscape. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 37m NNW-SSE; 32m ENE-WSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5-7m; int. H 0.2-0.8m; ext. H 2-2.5m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.8-7m; Wth of base 1-1.5m; D 1.3m) from an outer bank (Wth 3-5m; H 1.2-1.6m). A second outer fosse (at NNW: Wth of top 4.7m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.5m) and traces of a third bank (at NNW: Wth 2.5m; max. H 0.3m) only survive across the ridge (NNW-N) (max. ext. diam. 64m N-S), but there is also a fosse (Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.4m) and slight outer bank (Wth c. 2m; H 0.1m) outside the outer bank SE-SW. There is an entrance through the inner (Wth 2.3m) and outer (Wth 2.4m) banks with a causeway (Wth 3.2m) across the inner fosse at S. An overgrown rectangular enclosure or annnexe (RO051-031002-) (dims c. 30m N-S; c. 20m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-5m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 2m) and outer fosse (Wth of base 1.5m; D 0.3-0.5m) is attached to the outer bank at E, but the annexe is situated on low-lying ground. It has an entrance (Wth 2.4m), probably modern, at S.
