Castle — Toberavaddy

In 1641 Edward Ormsby owned 200 acres at Tobervaddy and Moigh (Muff) and he added 120 acres at Corderryhugh to this holding through the Cromwellian settlement as well as having shares in other land (Simington 1949, 128). Situated on the SW-facing slope of a NW-SE ridge, c. 150m from a SE-NW section of the River Suck which lies to the SW. This is an L-shaped structure of two wings, but very little survives of the NE and NW wings which meet at the S angle, apart from the foundations of walls (T 0.7-0.8m). The NE gable of two-storeys with an attic and robbed fireplaces, is all that remains of this wing (int. dims 26.5m NE-SW; 7.5m NW-SE). Outside the gable is a cellar with a barrel-vault (int. dims 10.5m NW-SE; 2.2m NE-SW; H 3.8m) entered at the SE. Of the NW wing (int. dims 23m NW-SE; 7.5m NE-SW), a fragment of the NW gable, with a gun-loop survives, and at the S angle where both wings meet is a circular tower with four gun-loops and a window at the ground floor. The house could be occupying the S angle of a bawn (RO041-031002-) (dims c. 55m NE-SW; c. 30m NW-SE) visible as slight grass-covered wall-footings, with a grass-covered roadway (RO041-031005-) (Wth 6.7m) running ESE from its E angle (L 66m) defined by a stone spread at N and a scarp (max. H 1m) at S. The foundations of a rectangular building (RO041-031003-) (int. dims 6.4m NW-SE; 6.1m NE-SW) with masonry walls (T 0.9m) and an entrance at SE lie c. 30m N of the house, with associated field walls, including a walled garden (RO042-030----) NW of the house. On the flood-plain c. 100m SW of the house is a rectangular enclosure (RO041-031004-) (dims 47m NW-SE; 25.4m NE-SW) defined by a shallow fosse or silted drain (Wth c. 2.3-3m; D 0.1m).
