Architectural fragment in Ballypheasan

A collection of cut stones is incorporated into walls and garden features at a house just c. 70m SW of Roscommon Dominican abbey (RO039-055001-). They were first identified by Frank Scott and recorded by Scott and Gary Dempsey. Locally it is thought that some of the stones may have come from an earlier house at the location, but some certainly derived from the Dominican abbey. There are some hammer-dressed quoinstones, a roughly chamfered stone with crude stops (L of chamfer c. 0.8m), a rough-out for a doorstep (L c. 1.4m) that was never used probably because it fractured, a small fragment (H 0.2m) with a rebate probably for a window shutter and a chamfered segmental arch may be late in date. However, a jambstone with a door rebate and an outer chamfer set lengthways into a drystone wall, two chamfered stones built into a wall and a stone with a chamfer and an external shutter rebate, probably from a large window, may be from the abbey.
