Roscommon castle (RO039-043001-) was returned to the Crown in 1566. In 1577 it was leased to Sir Nicholas Malby who proposed alterations in 1582, and he or his son, Henry, may have transformed it into a fortified house (RO039-043010-), although repairs and alterations were also conducted in 1609.
To the E of the fortified house a walled garden (dims 64m E-W; 84m plus N-S) was built with masonry walls, the S and E walls (T 0.6m; H 3.5m) of which survive with the foundations of a circular tower (int. diam. c. 3m) at the SE angle. The boundary wall (RO039-043014-) is c. 50m to the NE and is an extension of the E wall of this garden. An aerial photograph taken by Frank Scott in 2016 shows a rectangular enclosure (dims c. 40m N-S; c. 40m E-W) defined by what might be slight ditch features N of this garden with its W edge aligned on the W side of this garden and probably contemporary with it.
