Marked only on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, it is situated in a low-lying position on the W side of the avenue leading S to the old Harristown House. This was a memorial erected where James Young, a landlord and magistrate, was murdered on 02-06-1877. His assassin was never convicted, although two Fenians, Thomas Weldon and Francis McHugh, were tried and acquitted in 1880. The assassin is thought to be a man called Farrell, and the weapon was hidden in a thatch but it is now in Boston, U. S. A. (Thorne 2000). The cross was erected in the avenue but vandalized in 1929, after which it was moved to the graveyard in Barrack St., Castlerea. (Kenny 1979)
