On a gentle SW-facing slope. Described in gothic lettering as Oldtown Chapel on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is regarded as a church which may have been a Roman Catholic chapel before a cruciform church in Castlerea was built in 1798 in what is now St. Joseph's cemetery (Hurley 1943, vol. 1, 5; Beirne 2000, 225-6). It is not visible at ground level, and there is no trace of the well Tobershanbally (RO026-037002-) or of a settlement (RO026-037003-) implied in the name Oldtown. Archaeological testing (07E0153) just to the SE produced no related material other than traces of an earthen bank that may have surrounded the church but there were no burials (Casey 2007).
