What is recorded here

On a slight N-S rise on the N-facing slope of Rathcroghan ridge. An area of c. 3 ha between Courtmoyle (RO022-056028-) and Carran fort (RO022-056023-) had N-S pits (dims c. 10m x. c. 2m; D c. 0.5m) placed c. 10 apart and in two lines placed c. 20m apart. There were furter lines of pits in the wider area within field system (RO022-056032), and are visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP: AVI 19) from the 1970s but few of them survive. A small area of c. 0.5 ha (c. 1.5 acres) N of the road and c. 100m E of Carran Fort (RO022-056023-) has some surviving pits. Archaeological testing (06E0622) within the area of the pitfield produced no related material (Timoney 2009). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 13 July 2015
