There is a single reference to the commencement of a market town by Cormac Mac Tomaltach (KM 1218-44) in 1231 (ALC vol. 1, 309) at Port na Cargi. J. O'Donovan in the 1830s (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 1, 117) thinks it is on the S shore of Lough Key, opposite the Rock of Lough Key (RO006-046----) where Rockingham House was later built. He records that the older local people refered to Rockingham as Port na Carraige. Mac Dermot (1996, 106) follows this belief.
