What is recorded here

On top of the S summit of a NE-SW ridge. Circular grass-covered and flat-topped earthen mound (diam. of base 33m N-S; 30m E-W; diam. of top 11m; H 5.2-5.3m) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 7m at E to 9.8m at S; D 0.05m at S to 1m at E), with a small mound (diam. c. 3.5-3.75m; H 0.3m) on the summit (max. ext. diam. 45m). The embanked enclosure (RO006-118001-) is immediately outside the perimeter at W, and the fosse of the barrow may have straightened the bank of the enclosure here. Knox (1914b, 348-9) describes traces of an outer bank, and it may be an inauguration mound, although there are no historical references (FitzPatrick 2004, 82-4). See the attached aerial image taken from the N with the barrow on the left. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
