Sir Charles Coote developed an iron works using charcoal in the Arigna valley after 1600 as part of his land grants in counties Leitrim and Roscommon, but these were destroyed in the 1641 rebellion. Iron-works were re-started in 1786 by three O'Reilly brothers using coke derived from coal. From 1818 to 1836 the ironworks were operated by a local consortium using the local Arigna coal.
