What is recorded here

Situated on the N facing slope of high ground just below summit in undulating countryside. Site is totally overgrown making examination impossible. Only the S portion of the site was possible to examine. Here it consisted of a roughly circular area enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.1m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.7m) and external fosse (Wth 2m; ext. D 0.5m). A modern field boundary encloses the external fosse from S to E. Field fence intercepts site at W and N. The site would appear to be a large univallate ringfort located in a prominent position just below the brow of the hill. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
