What is recorded here

Raheen Castle depicted as a small square-shaped building on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map standing immediately S of a laneway/roadway a few metres NNW of a farmyard. Location of castle site incorrectly depicted on revised editions of the OS 6-inch and 25-inch maps where the castle is shown located further to the W than on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. Castle was situated on high ground overlooking Raheen Lough to the SW. Now levelled with just a few large stones showing through the surface which may be the remains of the foundations. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: David Sweetman Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 23 June 2016
