Burial ground in Killeigh

In 2006 Test-trenching was carried out by John Purcell under licence No. 06E0356 as part of a pre-planning schedule for a housing development within the zone of potential for ecclesiastical remains of Killeigh, Co. Offaly. A series of trenches were excavated by mechanical digger at the house sites, road networks and green spaces. A number of burials were uncovered in Trenches 1 and 2 at the east of the proposed development. These are limited to the east of the site and the development plans have been adjusted to allow a 10m buffer zone around these features. No excavation will take place within this area. After recording the burials, they were covered in geotextile and the trenches were backfilled.
