What is recorded here

Not visible at ground level. Illustrated by Grose in Antiquities of Ireland (Stalley 1991, 131). Square shaped structure three storeys high with hipped roof and large windows set in wide round arched embrasures with machicolation at roof level visible. Probable 17th-century fortified house which replaced earlier 16th-century castle. Stronghold of the Mac Coghlans destroyed in 1548 (Cooke 1875, 330). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
