Structure — peatland in Clonad (phillipstown Lower By.)

An extensive area (dims. 70.58m min. E-W x 16.37m min. N-S; D 0.42m) of roundwoods and predominantly heavy brushwood. The components of the site are, on the whole, irregularly deposited but in places, the wood appears to be regularly laid, with several elements lying parallel or perpendicular to each other. At the N extent of the site this material is more dispersed but is similarly laid. There may also be a number of separate structures within this site. The site also occurs in adjacent drain face indicating that it extends in a S direction. This material consists of a wide, deep and dense band of irregularly deposited wood. On the E side of the field surface, there is at least one possible trackway, orientated NE-SW, of transversely laid roundwoods and mixed brushwood overlying longitudinal roundwoods at either edge of the structure. This arrangement continues to the SW where it meets the main concentration of wood. This site sits predominantly in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and much natural wood. Radiocarbon dated to 2196-1894 cal. BC (UCD 0213). SMR OF018-105---- is located immediately E of this site. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
