Wall monument in Lynally Glebe

Monastery founded here in the 6th century by Colmán Eala who died in 611 (Ó Riain 2011, 203; Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 41). Present remains consist of a multiperiod church (OF016-031001-) originally of pre-Romanesque date with later 15th and 17th-century additions, graveyard (OF016-031002-) and possible early Christian enclosure (OF016-031007-) which survives as a crop mark with motte (OF016-032001-) to the S. A holy well (OF016-031008-) located to the SW of the church was filled in several years ago. There are two 17th-century armorial plaques (OF016-031006-) inserted into the E face of the W wall of Lynally church. This 17th century burial vault dating to 1684 has an impressive armorial plaque of Thomas Coffey and has been inserted into the inner face of the W gable of the church (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 143-4). This plaque is located off centre to N in the E face of the W gable of the church. The inscription on the plaque reads 'This monument was made for Thomas Coffy, clearke, and his deare wife Anne Hide and their posteritie Anno Dom 1684' (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 144; Anon. 1895-97, 487). Underneath this wall memorial there is a tombstone with the inscription which reads 'Here lyeth the body of Thomas Coffy, clearke, master in arts of Trinity Colledge, Dublin, Vicar of Fercall, and one of his Majestie's Charles II Justices of the Peace in the Kings County who died March ye 30 1690' (Anon 1895-7, 487-8). A large hole is now located in the area where the graveslab was located which marked the burial vault of Thomas Coffy.
