Grass-covered foundations on high ground overlooking surrounding countryside. Parts of SW and NE walls remaining (overall dims. 14m SE-NW, c. 12m SW-NE) but nothing to indicate nature of site. The orientations and size of the site would not indicate an ecclesiastical site, it may well be a tower house. (O'Flanagan 1933, 87). One of two castles (OF011-011----) at Monasteroris that were mentioned in the 1550 Survey of the area. The 1550 survey of Offaly recorded that there were two castles at Monasteroris, 'one newlie builded and thother all runyose', in addition to the ruined walls of the friary 'burnyd and rasid' and a mill and orchard (Curtis 1929 326, Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 108-9).
