What is recorded here

Not visible at ground level. Ballycumber house which was built in 1736 (Garner 1985, 13) was erected on the site of the castle. Date stone on the back wall of the house dates the castle to 1627. This datestone appears to be the top of a window frame probably belonging to the earlier castle which may have been a fortified house\tower house. The inscription reads ' DERMOT COGHLAN MADE THIS CASTELL IN ANNO DNI 1627'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
