What is recorded here

National Monument No. 81. Numerous earthworks in the fields around the castle (OF005-003001-) consist of field boundaries of indeterminate date, some of these linear earthworks may form part of an enclosing element of the orchards or fields of the Bishop of Clonmacnoise which were damaged during the construction of the Anglo-Norman Castle. Alternatively the earthworks in this field may form part of a deserted settlement associated with the castle. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: 20 December 2011
