Partially hachured — Faheeran

Located on ridge of ground with good extensive views in undulating countryside. Wall footings of a rectangular building known as Faheeran Castle (OF002-007001-) which is enclosed within a D-shaped enclosure (diam. 35m N-S; 50m E-W) defined by an earthen bank which has been degraded to a scarp at the W and S and a deep wide outer fosse (Wth 3.6m, ext. D 1m, int. D 2m) that has been filled in from N to E. The straight side of the D-shaped enclosure is located along the W side, where a causewayed entrance (Wth 5m) at SW gives access to the interior of the courtyard of the castle. There is possible settlement evidence in the form of low irregular series of earthworks to the SW of the castle, although these low earthworks may be related to land reclamation. It is possible that the D-shaped enclosure pre-dates the castle and was reused as a bailey for the castle in the medieval period. Alternatively the enclosure may be contemporary with the castle, representing the original enclosing element of the bawn or defended courtyard of Faheeran Castle.
