There is a report that the motte at Inishkeen (MO029-03001-) contains an underground passage that was open in the early nineteenth century. An old man describes how as a boy he entered ‘a large passage lined with stones and covered with large flags. He came to a recess or small chamber where he found a well of water’ (Reade 1874-5, 326).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
