What is recorded here

Situated on a shelf towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope. This rath is described as ‘Old fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and it is depicted as a hachured feature on the 1907 edition. It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 34.5m E-W; c. 33m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 1.2-2.2m) SE-W-NE that is incorporated into a field bank and hedge ESE-W-NW. There is no indication of a fosse or of an original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 8 May 2018
