Archaeological excavation (Excavation Licence No. 02E1147) in advance of development at the Westenra Arms Hotel revealed continuous occupation levels dating from the 16th to the 20th century and an earlier phase of activity of which the exact date is unknown. This early phase of activity was represented by a series of post- and stake-holes and possible traces of wattles. Above this layer was a series of clay floors which are believed to date to between 1550 and 1590. A section of the town ditch (MO009-060004-) was also exposed.
