Structure — peatland in Knockersally or Colehill

A probable hurdle visible in the section of a drain, 0.1m below the surface. The brushwood structure is two to three layers deep and constructed using light elements. It was recorded for 3.05m and had a depth of 0.22m. One roundwood was visible close to the top of the structure. It occurs within a cluster of sites situated between the western edge of the bog and the dryland island within the bog. (Bermingham 2014) The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0170). It was dated cal. 1277-1051 BC (UBA 26633). The main site was composed entirely of hazel and alder brushwood elements. The entire structure contained within the cutting measured 1.3m by 0.8–1.34m. It appears to have been a platform composed of a loose hurdle type construction, immediately alongside the northern extent of a haphazard arrangement of light brushwood and twigs. Thirteen elements had toolmarked ends, most of which were chisel points. A small cluster of birch and pomoideae roots 0.45m x 1.1m in size, with two toolmarked ends, was noted in the NE extent of the cutting. It was found at a level approximating 0.2m higher than the main site. The elements were laid roughly parallel. The toolmarked ends were wedge points with slightly concave facets (Whitaker 2017).
