Situated on a slight W-facing slope. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline recovered an iron bloom and revealed a concentration of iron slag (BGE: 1A/47/1) that was completely excavated (02E0868). It proved to be a natural but shallow depression (dims 2.2m x 0.85m; max. D 0.14m) filled with a loose black soil with plentiful charcoal and iron slag inclusions, but smelting had not taken place in it. (Tobin 2003; 2004; 2007)
