This monument was identified by geophysical survey (Licence no. 05R030Ext), confirmed by test excavation (Licence no. 05E0415) and excavated (Licence no. 05E0539) within Killeen Castle Demesne in advance of golf course development. Located c.300m south of Killeen Castle (ME038-012----) the site was characterised by a structure, possible workshop activity and a rectangular enclosing ditch. To the west of the site the original course of the river that runs north south through the demesne was identified. It was abutted by interrelated complexes of activity and related drainage system. The earth-cut structure (dims 9.7m x 7.1m) was aligned N-S and encompassed a basal layer of drainage overlain by a floor and stakehole setting. This was related to a large rectilinear ditch (Wth 1.5-2m) enclosing a largely sterile area (dims 26m N-S; 42m E-W). The material assemblage was dominated by local wares indicating a broad 13th/14th century date range. This correlated with radiocarbon analysis that returned a date range of AD 1280-1408 (Baker 2009, 47).
