Excavation — miscellaneous in Grange (navan Lower By.)

Situated on a slight N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (04E0925) by J. Roynane (2005) at Testing Area 2 of Contract 4 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological material (excavations.ie 2004:1245) that was excavated (E003125) by P. Lynch (2010) as Grange 1 in late July/August 2006 (excavations.ie 2007:1320) when a possible pit burial, a cereal-drying kiln and these metalled surfaces were recorded in an area of just over 1500 square metres. The area was divided by a NE-SW drain (L 33m plus; Wth 2m; D 0.7m) that was undated but is parallel with the mapped field bank c. 15m to the E and probably post-medieval in date. Four metalled surfaces (dims 4.8m x 2.5m; T 0.08m: dims 7m x 2.5m; T 0.05m: dims 6m x 3.75m; T 0.12; dims 3m x 3m; T 0.2m), each consisting of a single layer of small stones, were dispersed about the excavated area, one over a drain (L 5m; Wth 1.7m; D 0.4m) that fed into the main ditch and so post-dates it. A flint flake and six sherds dating from the 13th to the 18th century were recovered from the topsoil, and the features may be medieval or post-medieval in date.
