What is recorded here

Situated on a col with lower ground to the NW, NE and SE and higher ground to the SW, but the exact location is not known. A rath and souterrain (ME005-111002-) were partially excavated (92E0052) in Cormeen as part of a Bord Gáis Eireann pipeline from Dunleer, Co. Louth, to Mullagh, Co. Cavan. All features were truncated and only survived in the subsoil. A gully (L 5.4m; Wth 0.4m; D 0.1m) had three shorter similar gullies in a line c. 0.5m to the E. Another slighter gully was 2.1m further E and a fourth was 2.5m W of the first. There were a few small pits, and three post-holes were placed at the entrance to the souterrain that extended W, while six other post-holes were dispersed about the area. A section of a ditch (Wth 2.6m; D 1m) covered with re-deposited subsoil was excavated 6m W of the souterrain trench, and a gully at the E edge of the excavated area is interpreted as the E side of a rath (int. diam. 43m).
