from King (1987, 298): NOBBER II. c. 1690. This effigial slab, known as the EDWARD BALFE memorial, lies in the old churchyard in Nobber. Its position is probably in what was the east end of the medieval church. A fragmentary marginal inscription in low false relief and Roman capitals survives as follows: THIS TOMBE WAS ERECTED BY PATRICK / A… / ..S.TO / ..V/…ER AND FOR HIS WIFE. The remainder of the slab is decorated in high relief with an achievement of arms, which has not been identified, and mortality symbols between male, in armour and with sword shown separately by his side, and female effigies. Dimensions: L 2.3m; Wth 1.28m. (Smith 1888, 28)
