Enclosure in Esker South,scardaun East

Located in lowlying, generally level poorly drained pasture. This enclosure is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It is evident as a semicircular area (33m NW−SE; c. 21m NE−SW to drain/road at SW) defined on the curving side by a low, broad-slumped earthen bank (Wth c. 10m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.4m) and on the straight side at SW by a modern field drain (Wth 2.4m), oriented NW−SE, with parallel field fence (Wth 1.2m), outside which is a modern road (Wth 2.4m) also oriented NW−SE. The field fence/road coincides with the townland boundary between Esker South (to NE) and Scardaun East (to SW). The road appears to have truncated the SW side of the enclosure, which was probably originally circular in plan. There is a low area or break (Wth c. 2m) in the bank at N, possibly an original entrance. The interior is level and appears to be at a slightly lower level than exterior ground level. It is damp and soggy underfoot. In the field on the opposite (SW) side of the road, a low linear rise (L c. 16m NW−SE; Wth 2m; H 0.2-0.3m) can be discerned lying immediately adjacent and parallel to the field fence and road. This rise/bank is narrower than the enclosing bank of the enclosure and does not curve as one might expect if it were a remnant of the SW arc of an originally circular enclosure, so it is unclear if it relates to the enclosure.
