Fulacht fia in Cloonaghmanagh

In damp, rush-grown pasture, located in a small stream valley, at the base of a steep SW-facing slope. The fulacht fia is c. 25m N of the meandering W-flowing stream, at the interface of dry, rising ground and flat, wet ground. A small area of hazel wood borders the S bank of the stream at SE. A broad expanse of raised rocky terrain stretches to S. This fulacht fia consists of a compact, horseshoe-shaped mound (10m E−W; 9m N−S; H 0.7m at S) of heat-shattered stone and charcoal. There is a shallow, U-shaped depression (c. 3m E−W; c. 2m N−S) between the ‘arms’ of the mound, open to the N, marking the location of a trough. The mound is grass-covered and well preserved; its curving slope is higher and well-defined on the S half, but is lower at N where the mound merges with rising ground. The trough depression is marked by a growth of rushes and yellow flag iris. There is a possible cashel (MA105-012----) c. 90m upslope in the same field.
