What is recorded here

In pasture, in the N corner of a modern field, located in gently rolling terrain. A broad expanse of bog, much of it under forestry, lies c. 200m to N. Views are restricted by the hilly landscape and high field fences. Slightly raised, circular area (29.6m N–S; 31.6m E–W) defined by a bank and enclosed by an external fosse. The bank (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.4m, at W) has a low internal rim and a well defined external slope, highest (ext. H 0.8m) at E. The fosse is visible as a shallow depression (Wth 3.5-4m), marked by denser vegetation, and is overlain at NW and NE by straight field fences. The rath interior is level. The entrance may have been at SE where there is a broad slump (Wth c. 4m) in the bank, although there is no clearly defined break in the fosse. The interior and bank are planted with mature conifers and the interior has a rather soft, wettish and peaty consistency underfoot. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 27 September 2022
