Mound in Barreel

In pasture, located on a low, narrow roughly N−S ridge, with a sharp fall of ground immediately to N. The location overlooks gently undulating terrain, with an expanse of bog stretching to NE. This monument is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It is visible in current aerial imagery. Raised subcircular mound (overall diam. c. 22-24m) with a relatively flat top (diam. c. 12m) and broadly sloping sides (Wth slope 6-10m; H 1.7m at N, 1.5m at E−S) enhanced by a natural fall of ground on the N and E, and truncated on the W side by a N−S field wall/property boundary. A low bank-like rise (Wth 3-3.5m; int. H 0.3m) defines the top edge of the platform at SSW; this is evident only for a short length (L 4m), and there is no trace of an enclosing bank elsewhere around the top of the platform. The N slope of the mound has the steepest fall of ground, dropping to a narrow terrace (Wth 8m), at the outer edge of which there is another abrupt fall of ground (H c. 2m). A row of close-set boulders and stones along the E−W edge of the terrace is a modern feature. According local information, there was a ‘Lisheen’ or children’s burial ground (MA101-103001-) at or in the vicinity of the mound.
