An E−W aligned grave (L c. 1.8m; Wth c. 0.75m) was uncovered on the summit of a high sand hill/esker during farm works in Gorteen townland in the early 1930’s. The site was visited by the Ballyhaunis Historical and Archaeological Society and an account was published in the Irish Press on 19th June 1933 (SMR file): The sides of the grave were formed of stone slabs laid on edge. It also was roofed with stone slabs, but these had been removed and were strewn about; the grave was partly filled with sand and clay, and no bones or artefacts were noted. A summary description was published by Raftery (1940-41, 302). The precise location of the grave was not recorded.
