Burnt mound in Cullentragh (costello By.)

Located at the base of a NE-facing ridge slope, in a 20m wide margin of rough, wet pasture and reeds bordering the W shore of Derrykin Lough. This burnt mound appears to have been partly levelled. It consist of a low, grass-covered oblong mound (13.9m N–S; c. 12m E–W; H 0.3m at W, 0.8m at E) forming a shallow arc of firm dry ground amidst the surrounding damp terrain. The E side of the mound is broadly slumped. In parts where the sod cover has been denuded, concentrations of small angular sandstone fragments are exposed in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil. A surface spread of stone and charcoal was noted extending for a c. 10m to the SE–S of the mound. The exact limits of the mound are uncertain. Another burnt mound (MA092-111----) is located on the same shoreline c. 60m to SE. A possible crannóg (MA092-027----) is indicated on the 1838 map in Derrykin Lough close to this location, and another possible crannóg (MA092-089----) is shown in the lake c. 70m to SW.
