Fulacht fia in Fawnglass

Situated on the N side of the valley that runs westwards from the Island’s harbour. The site lies on a gentle S-facing slope just outside the eastern boundary of the garden of a newly built house. The fulacht fia comprises a large mass of heat-fractured stone (L c. 7.5m × T c. 0.5m) exposed in E face of a recently deepened and widened stream channel that runs N–S immediately outside the garden boundary. The mass of stone peters out at the S end, but at the N end it terminates just before two large boulders that project from the stream bank. The ground surface in the vicinity is much disturbed and/or obscured by dumps of spoil. The mass of stone rests on c. 0.5m of peat that in turn overlies a gravelly subsoil that forms the stream bed. Little is visible in the western bank of the stream but this is largely over- grown with vegetation. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island. Volume 5: Archaeology.
