Fulacht fia in Glen

Situated in enclosed land at the foot of a short steep N-facing slope, part of the E–W ridge that defines the southern side of the wide valley to W of the island’s harbour. The fulacht fia is close to the watershed between the valley and the western part of Glen townland. The monument is now situated just inside (to S) of the roadside fence of the island’s main west road. Originally, it may well have been on/or close to the bank of a stream (now re-channelled as a drain) that rises a short distance to W and now runs along the northern side of the road opposite the fulacht fia. The fulacht fia is exposed in the lower end of a large grassed-over tillage ridge (Wth c. 2.2m × H 0.5m) is a mass of heat-fractured stone and some charcoal (Wth 0.8m × H 0.55m). The exposure was probably caused by sheep-rubbing. At the point where it terminates, the tillage ridge is immediately S of a small drain that runs past it on a roughly E–W axis, draining towards E.
