Field boundary in Bunnamohaun

Associated eight huts (MA084-004001- to MA084-004008-), ranged around the N and NE sides of a small natural basin or fold, through which a stream flows, on the lower SW slopes of Knockmore. The location is locally named ‘Prawke’, and according to tradition the huts are associated with booleying. The wall is situated to E of the stream at the southern end of the natural fold in which the dwellings are situated. It consists of an intermittent single line of boulders running on a roughly E–W axis (L c. 35m). The boulders are of angular form and protrude only slightly (H 0.2m max.) above the sod. They appear to define the northern and eastern limits of a generally stone-free area—possibly a tillage plot—delimited along its western edge by the stream itself. Although smooth and grassy underfoot, this ‘plot’ nevertheless occupies a steep W-facing slope. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island. Volume 5: Archaeology.
