Hut site in Bunnamohaun

Situated on a steep SW-facing hill slope, part of the western flanks of Knockmore. There is a stream c. 35m to S. The hut is associated with an enclosure (MA084-003001-), it lies on sloping ground at the south-western limits of the enclosure where it clearly overlies the enclosure bank. It consists of a small hut, roughly oval in plan externally but tending towards rectangular internally (NNE–SSW c. 3.7m, WNW– ESE c. 2.8m). It is defined by a very low, much degraded, grassy bank throughout. Although up to 0.3m high internally its external height varies from 0.7m on downslope (south-western) side to c. 0.1m on upslope (north-eastern) side. Traces of a shallow fosse-like depression are visible directly outside the bank from N to ENE—possibly part of an excavation/drainage trench around the upslope side. A slight gap (Wth 0.4m) about mid- point along the eastern side probably marks the entrance. A number of lichen-covered stones and slabs protrude from the sod (or lie loose) in the interior and the bank at SW. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island.
