Enclosure in Carrowbaun (costello By.)

In pasture, located on a ridge, with a steep slope on the N side. The location provides extensive views, but is overlooked to E by the ridge summit. Nephin Mountain is visible to NW on the far horizon. A subcircular area (23m N–S; c. 24m E–W) defined by a remnants of a stone wall. The wall survives at SE–NW as a low, sod-covered stony rise (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.55m), with occasional glimpses at NW of a possible stone kerb on the inner face. At NNW–NNE it is incorporated into a later E–W field wall which partly respects the curve of the enclosure. At E a straight N–S field wall overlies or truncates the E edge of the enclosure. A curving line of stones protrudes from the ground 1.5–2m outside the enclosing wall at SE–SW. It respects the curve of the enclosure but at SW begins to peters out and then curves in to merge with the enclosure wall; it cannot be traced elsewhere around the circuit. At the point where it merges with the enclosure wall, it is overlain by a heap of field clearance stones that abuts the enclosure at SW extending S from it for 4m. The central part (diam. c. 11m) of the interior is slightly raised or gently domed in profile, and defined SE–SW by a slight stony scarp. A roughly square pit (4m NE–SW; 3m NW–SE) has been dug into the SW side of this raised area. There is a cashel (MA082-008----) c. 150m to W.
