Indicated — Castlesheenaghan

In pasture, located on top of an E−W ridge, with excellent views in all directions. Raised circular area or low platform (37.5m N−S; 39.5m E−W) defined by an earthen scarp (H c. 0.8-1.2m), which is faced with drystone walling and topped by a low stony lip (Wth 2-3m; H 0.15-0.45m), and enclosed by a well defined fosse (Wth 3.4m) and an outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1-1.4m; ext. H 1.5-1.65m) with external stone facing. The stone-faced scarp appears to have been topped by a wall, reduced now to a low stony rise on the W half of the circuit; on the E half, the scarp is topped by a narrow, roughly-built drystone wall (Wth 0.8m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m) which appears to be a later field wall designed to serve as a property boundary. Several breaks around the circuit at N, E, and S allow access to the interior from surrounding fields. The original entrance may have been at E, where there is a causeway across the fosse and a gap (Wth 3.6m) in the outer bank. The centre of the interior is very gently domed. There is a poorly defined hollow slightly to S of centre, with a few stones protruding from it. In the SE quadrant, several large stones and boulders lie adjacent to a small stony rise. A field wall/property boundary, on a NNW−SSE axis, crosses the cashel to W of centre. The outer stone bank is lightly ringed with hawthorn trees.
