Bohola Church — Bohola

In a graveyard (MA071-077002). The graveyard encompasses on a small oval hillock, the base of which is enclosed by a wall. The church is located on the summit of the hillock at its E end. It is named ‘Bohola Church’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch maps, where it is depicted as a rectangular building with a smaller square building or extension at its NE angle; only the small square building is shown on later map editions, with the annotation ‘Bohola Church (in Ruins)’. A square building (5.95m ENE-WSW; 5.5m NNW−SSE) constructed of mortared stone is located at the break of slope on the hill summit at is E end. It is roofless. The walls (H 2.35m at E, 1.55m at W; T 0.6m) are of roughly coursed sandstone and some limestone blocks, of uneven size and shape. The E wall is higher as it is built up to compensate for the natural slope on this side. A doorway (Wth 0.79m; H 1.75m) is centrally located in the E wall and there is a narrow window (Wth 0.12m; H 0.5m, ext.) in a deeply recessed embrasure (Wth 0.47; H 0.64m, int.) in the centre of the W wall, directly opposite the doorway. There is a recess (Wth 0.48m; H 0.3m; D 0.15m) at the W end of the S wall. A low setting of stones partitions off a rectangular area (2.3m N−S; 2.9m E−W) in the NW quadrant of the interior, possibly a grave plot but no gravemarker is evident. The walls are thickly ivy-covered on the internal and external faces. There is no trace of the larger E-W church shown on the 1838 map. There is a motte (MA071-076----) 40m to N.
