What is recorded here

In pasture, located on the top of a knoll with good view of the surrounding landscape. There is a disused railway line 50m to W. Raised circular area (24.2m; 26.5m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 2.1m, at WSW) which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.5m at ENE) on the NE arc. The rath has been incorporated in to a later system of field fences, and the external face of the bank/scarp has been cut to the vertical and faced with stone to serve as a field fence; at WSW−N the top of the bank has a shallow step (Wth 0.6-1m) dropping to the stone-faced external slope. A slight depression (Wth 2.6m) outside the bank at SE−SW may indicate a fosse. The interior slopes down slightly from centre to E. At E a low section of scarp, with relatively modern stone cladding, may obscure an original entrance facing the more gently sloping side of the knoll. Grass cover, with a few hawthorn trees around the perimeter. Another rath (MA071-048----) is located 265m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 July 2021
