Indicated — Lough Conn

Located in the NE end of Lough Conn. This causeway is indicated on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as a band of relatively dry ground (Wth 50-80m N-S) extending c. 120m E–W from the mainland to the E shoreline of Annaghroe Island. It is depicted on the 25-inch plan and the 1930 OS 6-inch maps as stony, and is annotated ‘Sand & Shingle’ on the 25-inch plan. On both the 25-inch and the 1930 6-inch maps a track or road, indicated by parallel dashed lines, is shown continuing from a mainland road across the neck of dry ground to the island; on the 25-inch plan the track/road is annotated as ‘Causeway’ and on the 1930 map as ‘Ford’; the route the track/road takes is different on the two maps. This appears to be a natural feature, a bar of sand or gravel, which has at various times in the past provided a natural route-way to the island. A modern track/road now extends across it from the mainland, leading to a house on the island. There is no visible evidence of an ancient, built causeway.
