The precise location of a circular setting of stones on the slopes of Carron Mountain has not been identified. In 1975 the Forestry Commission contacted the Archaeology Deptartmen of UCC, in relation to archaeological sites disturbed during forestry development. One of these consisted of a possible stone circle in the townland of Ballymacshaneboy. The site was visited by John W. Barber and Ann Lynch and described as following; 'a circular setting of contiguous sandstone blocks, the approximate diameter of which is 12m. The blocks average 1m long by 0.25m thick standing to a height of 0.35m above the present level of the partly cutaway peat. The E third of the circle has been disturbed by two deep trenches cut in the process of recent forestry development. Examination of the trenches shows the presence of a low bank of loose stones, some 2m wide, immediately within the circle. It is difficult, from surface indications, to classify the monument with any confidence. Its closest parallels are with the monuments called “circle L” and “circle K” at Lough Gur, which are visible from this site’.
